Description
This single-semester elective course is designed to explore contemporary and relevant perspectives on timeless issues facing societies. Students engage in significant research and each lesson ends with an essay assignment that encourages students to express their opinions. Topics include media, government, civil liberties, poverty, terrorism, crime, the environment, and many more.
Students learn to discern bias in publications and compare opposing viewpoints, by researching EBSCO Point of View articles. Rather than searching for a single solution, students learn to approach social issues with a comprehensive long-term view.
Students will also study various personalities and non-profit organizations credited with accomplishments in social issues. Every student will select a social issue and suggest solutions in the form of a project presentation. This project will be displayed in Melamed Academy’s online bulletin board.
